the w140 alternator replacement was "easy" but it took me several hours.
No majot brain work, just labor
teh following are the steps I took, in a attempt of correct order.
To replace the alternator on a 140 (1993 500SEL)
1 - Disconnect the battery
2 - remove both the under carrage covers
3 - Remove both coolant hoses near the alternator
4 - remove the transmittion line to the radiator. Completly remove - both ends.
5 - Disconnect wires from back of alternator
6 - Loosen the serpentine belt - with teh tentioner - 17 mm wrenc and move tentioner, remove belt
7 - Remove two bolts that hold alternator in.
8 - With all wires disconnected, and hoses removed - the alternator can me wiggled out of the car.
9 - Remove the belt pully from the old alternator. Snce I didn't have a big vise to hld the old alternator - to remove the pulley, I jacked the car, placed the old alternatore under the tire, lowered the car just enough to "grabe the alternator". Thuis will hold the alternator - remove the pulley
10- As the say - replacement is the reverse of removal.
No rocket science, but not just pull and replace - the other stuff must be removed first.
If others have improvements to this list - please post.
I was going to replace the voltage reguklator on the old alternator - but didn't see how to do it . Hence I have an extra voltage regulator - yes I had purchasedboth an alternator and the voltage regulator. Just wanted to be "ready:.
Thanks for the help.
