The brake theory sounds like a good one to me. Or, perhaps it's your rack dampener pin. After I adjusted the rack dampener pin on my car, my low rpm acceleration greatly improved. The pin can hamper your low rpm speed if it's too tight. It's really simple to adjust. Do a search for 'rack dampener pin' or 'idler adjustment screw' (I think that's the other name for it). The process should take 5-10 minutes.
How much vibration does your engine cause at idle? If it's a lot, the pin probably needs to be adjusted. If it's not much, maybe not. But all in all, it's one of the easier things you can do to these cars.
Also, if your car gets 'the shakes' when you're at a stoplight after a highway drive, that's a pretty classic sign that the pin needs to be adjusted.
