I was talking to an old-timer from Scranton, PA, which is where my parents grew up. He and I both commented on how people in Scranton used to really look out for each other. He attributed it to the stability that town had. They had generations of families living in the same houses and neighborhoods they grew up in. That continuity created strong bonds between people, or something. He said Scranton used to be that way, but it has changed in recent years.
