Isn't oil in the vacuum system a symptom of vacuum pump problems?

There's a nifty little way you can find this problem before it's too late, though it seems it's too late for the thread starter. What you do is place a small paper gas filter in the vacuum line that goes from the brake booster line to the door locks. I've done it to mine, but I can't find a photo of it.
