Is it necessary to buy the "glow plug reamer" tool? Or just pull & clean the glow plugs once in a while (year? 6 months?)
Car racked up 55K between late 98 and early 05. Took out the prechambers and all that, had the head cleaned but there wasn't that much to clean. Sure there were some deposits on the prechamber area facing the piston but that is about it. There is some black stuff but nothing that severe in the last 60K and year and a half. The tips of the GPs had a coating of black on it that wiped off.

So, to answer your question, I didn't buy the reamer and probably wouldn't unless there was a lot of crud. The plugs jammed in the threads. Once that cleared, they came out without much fuss.
