I think that most reasoned folks, however, are content with securing the border against terrorists and making sure that current immigration laws are equitably enforced across the board (or across the border).
Since you asked, now I'll ask you:
1. Are you for open borders, let anyone come and go as they please?
Or,
2. Do you want to make sure that the current immigration laws are fairly enforced and only legal immigrants are allowed to come in.
Or are you for some other system?

You ask why people keep missing the point. I believe it is because the title was racy and so they get caught up in defending or opposing it. If the title was a boring one, nobody would bother. Sensationalize it and you have instant attention.
1. No. Just like my house, I like it when I choose who to let in and not let in.
2. Yes. I might let in the stacked girl while keeping the guy out. Depending on my preference, of course. Seriously, I would like control of who comes and goes. We have enough undesirables locally. Why add more? Can we support everyone who has an issue? Do we want to bring in criminals, worthless people, etc, etc? If they are so important to ag or whatever, have the industries apply for visas for them. Petition your senator to increase the qouta, etc, etc. Not just let them in. I am not against keeping them out no matter what. I am aginst letting them run across the border whatever the reason. OTOH, if the industries find them so important, have them do it legally. After all, if I needed a truck, would those industries like ag and construction mind it if I borrowed one for a bit?
I think we cannot easily enforce it with guards and walls, snipers, etc, etc. Easier to find the people that hire them and fine the hell and imprison the owners. Much more profitable too.
