Well, I got word from the mechanic. The engine checks out! The head and gasket are intact, and the compression numbers are good. He said the car starts easily, runs strong, and even stops when you press on the brake!
The AC is not working and I asked him if he could fix it, but he said no...he is going in for hip replacement surgery tomorrow and is out of the shop for 3 weeks. The thing that he felt most compelled to tell me was that the tint job was either so bad or so old that it's impossible to see out the rear window...The mechanic is the shop owner, is also a 300D driver ('84, I think,) and he didn't charge me for the look over. So, the next time you need a mechanic in Stuart, FL, give Michael at Church Street Dodge a call at 772-220-2255. He might even be getting around a little better...
I'm starting to get psyched to pick up this car!

Good luck.

Thanks, great advice. What are the critical tools I need to send down? I'm taking my radar detector and GPS with me on the plane...
