In case anyone is interested, last night I went back under the car, loosened the differential and knocked out the bushing that was on the front mount bolt. The differential is now on a perfect level with the driveshaft, which I hope will correct the problem with the failing rear flex disc.
My only guess is that whoever was swapping the differential on this car before me got a differential from a different model and had to put the bushing in there to prevent the flex disc fron hitting the rear sub frame.
Now it really rides like a mercedes, and I hope it will stay that way for a long time to come.
