I had the very same problem with my 1989, 260E.
I knew it was ignition related as, like you said, the engine just died.
I replaced the ignition coil, the coil wire, distributor cap and rotor, all at once, and never had the problem again. That was 3 years ago.
Which part was defective, I'll never know.
