I'm not positive about the '85 model, but the '81 has an arrangement on top of the valve cover that uses vacuum switches to simulate the vacuum signal from a gas engine that is the shift signal for the automatic transmission. Since you just put the car back together, I expect that you have a broken vacuum connector or some such problem.
