My Grandpa in Virginia always used concrete as ballast in his John Deere A's and Allis-Chalmers U orchard tractors,I remember the holes bored into the sidewalls where the concrete could be seen.

He always claimed it gave better traction in the moist soil with the additional benefit of no flat tires,and was a helluva lot cheaper than tthe cast iron hub weights the dealers sold.You ever hear of this?
