ooops, My bad - full credit to dkveuro for the service manual.
I don't have fond memories of the York A/C compressor, lived with them in my 220D and early W123 240D days. As I recall I replaced 2-3 of them over a 8 year period. I can vividly remember a trip on the Pennsylvania turnpike when a rod broke in the compressor - blew a hole right through the side of the compressor and there was oil everywhere.
Seems like the A6 and R4 compressors were a big and improvement and the newer Nippondenso compressors are even better. My daily driver (91 300D) now has 202K miles on it's original Nippondenso compressor - the A/C still blows ice cold after 1.5 decades of service.
