A flightless bird in NZ lays them. We eat the raw, unfertilized ones. Like chicken eggs, sorta. If you leave it on a counter too long it will start to transmogrify into a kiwi bird by first turning grey and hairy. But since it isn't fertilized it ceases in mid-molt. Try it, you wife will love the experiment after a few weeks.

An alternative hypothesis is that it grows on a vine and is originally a tropic fruit from South China, Indochina, and the adjacent islands. It was intro'd to ANZ and later to the USA.

Round-eyes don't like fruit with furren names so they thought, "Hey, who hates shoe polish?" and named it kiwi for marketing.
