Yeah, I tend to think the methods that are commonly believed to yield the best deals often have caveats or some smoke and mirrors that end up making the deal less advantageous than the one you might have made in person. Even though the haggling can be a pain in the butt.

As far as insurance goes, I have found Liberty Mutual's rates to be very good. It may vary by states. I don't know for sure about that. Giving them your home owner's insurance business, too, will usually result in some additional savings as well.
