The starter is the only electrical required to start the engine. If you can get it to turn over it should start. Don't crank the starter for more than about 15 seconds at a time. Let it cool between attempts.

The glow plug system is needed for operating the vehicle with repeated starts. But if you just want to hear it run you can start it a few times without the glow plugs.

There is a vacuum actuated fuel shutoff on the injection pump. You can actuate the fuel shutoff manually and should know how to do that without having to think about it. When you turn off the key it sends vacuum to the fuel shutoff.

If you are not familiar with the idea of a run away diesel, now would be the time to learn it. Have a way to block intake air into the engine or have a CO2 fire extinguisher handy.
