Hell, it ain't rocket science,just buy some perennials and trees suited to your zone,lift the grass,plant and water,that's how I started,house hadn't been lived in for 30 years so I just went in with a chainsaw,rototiller and lots of imagination,the 2 goldfish ponds were there,just needed to be unearthed,I love the wild look,although a great deal of work goes into maintaining it.
Nothing like flower and plant catalogues to teach you about plants and their needs.
