The check engine light may be related to the cats. I'm no expert so you might want to see what the other contributors make of it.
My MB dealer did my cats for about £1,200 including labour, but I send all my maintenance his way so he gives me favourable terms. You probably don't want to hear this, but in the last year I have expended about £5,000 on maintenance. I figure on keeping the car forever and with 100k miles on the clock it was always going to need fairly heavy work, so I went ahead and did it all.
