Over the years, I've solved my vintage wiper refill problems by re-using the original metal strip that slides into the blade assembly. This works on most vintage American wiper blades, some OE foreign car blades and most vintage foreign cars that had stainless Trico or Anco blades installed many years ago. The blades I'm referring to use a one-piece stainless strip with a slit down the center to grip the rubber. If your vintage wiper blades have this one-piece strip and the rubber wears out, save the strip.

My '57 DKW, '61 Ponton and '60 Fintail came with vintage stainless Anco or Trico blades, with one-piece strips. My '67 Sunbeam Alpine has British OE blades with one-piece strips. Rather than waste time trying to track down correct 10, 11 or 13 inch blades or inserts, I simply buy common length inserts from Wal-Mart or Pep-Boys, pull the rubber from the new strips, cut the rubber to the right length, then slide them into my original strips.

I haven't tried this trick with the OE Bosch blade, which typically uses two separate strips to grip the rubber, though if you can find a one piece Anco/Trico type insert/strip of the correct length (the type with the spring clip at the end) those can be installed in the Bosch blade assembly. Alternately, There are Bosch refills availible that can be cut to length for the older Bosch blades.

Happy Motoring, Mark
