Regional or generational?

John, do you think it's regional or generational, this reluctance to discuss things of this nature. My dad would have considered such conversations to be in poor taste.

He came from an old Southern family that had owned a sizable portion of the town they lived in. He would never have owned an MB, thinking it was too pretentious. He wanted a Lincoln Towncar til the day he died, but would never have bought one of those either.

He often loaned his employees, brothers, more distant relatives, and sometimes nearly complete strangers money. I asked him why, because I thought many of them wouldn't pay it back. He told me he was almost certain none of them would, but he didn't do it with that in mind. He was fortunate to have more than many of them had, so he felt it was important for him to share what he had with them when he could.

My dad! What a man. I still miss him a lot even after nearly twenty years. No, I don't find those kind of values nearly as often in my generation as I did in his, I'm sorry to say.
