My dad used to say, "Now you're cooking with gas on the front burner," when I came up with a good idea.
(I've always wondered. Did gas stoves in the early 20th century [my father was born in 1909] have a bigger or stronger front burner, which gave rise to the expression?)
My mother was western Canadian, and always referred to a Phillips-head screwdriver as a "French" screwdriver. No Canadian I've ever met has ever heard that expression . . . but I still use it to this day.
