Cover just discolored. I have seen a lot of them like that. Nothing wrong with it, just the material they used for the engine cover gets discolored due to heat. I think MB never imagines there owners actually opening a hood. My W203 has gone through three hood pads that shrunk due to moistures, and no I have never sprayed water in that engine compartment. Dealer always wonders why I notice it. I tell them I actually do pop the hood once in a while. Kind of like the time I had a thump in the rear when sliding the ass around corners. I thought the service advisor was going to pass out when I described it. He told the Tech and the tech gave him a strange look. He had to say when I was driving spiritedly it happened. Had to actually take the tech out and of course it did not do it.... Silly MB not thinking people will actually drive the car as it was built to be driven!
