I have since read some stuff about this and think I have a better understanding of the issues.
The IceLink connection apparently provides you with more of the available features by integrating the I Pod or Satellite radio into the car's sound system. This allows you to use the steering-wheel-mounted controls, etc with your add-on product.

I will be happy just to have the basics.
