Check for a leaking fuel line to the fuel distributor as well -- it was leaking on the TE, not enough to see unless you removed the air filter housing, but caused a distinct fuel smell.

Doesn't take much fuel leakage to make it stink, and the fumes can go almost directly into the air intake in traffic.
