Not sure that you need to feel ambitious to drain the torque convertor. It should be a routine part of changing the transmission fluid. Otherwise you only change half of the fluid. I bet a lot of the Quick Lube type places don't drain it. Also never wipe anything inside the pan or transmission with a cloth rag. A little piece of lint can cause you some problems. Just let it drain and drip, drip, drip as long as you can take it. Then fill it up about halfway, maybe a little more and start the car. This gets the fluid into the torque convertor. If you try to pour all the fluid into the dipstick tube without getting it into the torque convertor, you'll end up with a few quarts on your driveway. At least that's the way it is on the 123's.
