I had given up on mine ('86 420SEL); I changed the timing chain this spring, got it all back together (whew!) and, It's a Miracle! my cruise works perfectly.
Guess I jarred something or made contact when I took the actuator off to get it out of the way. Who knows? sometimes we get lucky.
