Your remark: "depressingly riducule yourself for stuff your never even did?" In Israel's case, they did do some "stuff" that virtually guaranteed years and years of virulent animosity.

As for stuff we have done, it's a bit ironic that we're anxious about the "Islamo-fascists" wanting to destroy us and our way of life after we went through about 40 to 50 years of wanting to destroy the communist way of life, complete with the slaughter of 1.5 to 3 million peasants in Vietnam to back up that intent. Now, funny thing, communism is on the wane, largely for reasons that have little or nothing to do with our expensive opposition.

Turns out it was an inferior system after all.

Some of the complaints of hard-core Islamic militants have foundation in fact. We did walk on Iran with spiked shoes while overturning, through trickery, their first democracy and then put the hated Shah back in power and armed and trained his secret police. Imagine if an Islamic country had done that to us. Further imagine that the same country invaded a neighbor and perpetrated Abu-Gharib lunacy and various outrages like inbred hillbilly boy Green's rape and murder of the 15 year old cutie and family.

I guarantee you, we would not take that lying down.

I'm not ready to announce that yes, we are truly horrid people so please come and do what you will with us. OTOH, this non-stop focusing of 100% of the blame on them for all entanglements is not accurate.
