Well, it would be nice but sometimes, as they say on the track "You run what you brung." If this is all you have, this is all you have. You cannot reasonably expect them to bring in the SWAT team, psych team, etc, etc for every call. Standard cop cars don't have all that stuff with them, do they? Why stop there? Why not call in a SEAL team? Surely they are better equipped and trained to handle any such situation than a cop? Bet they could have wrestled her to the ground with less injuries. How far do you want them to go that is reasonable?
That was my point. I'll bet they shoot a tight group at the range. Out there, it is different. Conditions are different. You don't have good lighting, position, time to ponder on which shot would be better, etc, etc. She lunged at them. Maybe you would have taken a knife for her but do you expect them to do that? Would you do that for a complete stranger that you know nothing of as to what frame of mind they are in? At a 40% connection percentage, which 4 shots would YOU eliminate if you were in that position where I am coming at you with a knife? Do you know which ones hit and didn't? Your gun come with a gaurantee of a hit? If they had run 100 shots, I'd agree with you. 5 shots for a person with a knife is not excessive IMO.
I think your grief is clouding your judgement.
