Paid $80 for a 1998 Cadillac Deville with 42xxx miles last year, wrecked down the right side. I put $650 into doors, a fender and paint, figure book value was $10,000, but even with the new battery I had under a grand in it. I gave it to my brother in law for a Xmas gift, he was having some problems and is a huge guy (6 ft 6, 300+ LBs) and I figured he'd at least fit in it. He loves it, but when he went to get it titled in Michigan they tried to tell him he had to pay sales tax on the retail value, which they computed at $13,000...he showed them the gift affidavit from me and they only made him pay tax on $1000.
