I bought a '86 Chevy Cavalier wagon at the San Francisco towing company's abandoned/seized/towed for unpaid tickets auto auction for $325, it never looked like much and needed a muffler, cat, battery and then was pretty much OK, had it for a couple of years and then gave it away to a friend who'd helped me work on it and needed a cheap car, actually it wasn't too bad of a car and still was running when he gave it away to someone in Santa Cruz.
It was the perfect car for running around in SF because when people saw you coming, you knew NO ONE would ever argue with you over the right of way
