When you compare the fuel mileage of a 300E and a 300SE/L, the M103 is out of its eficiency range in a W126 if a W124 gets 30-40% more miles out of a gallon. When introduced, the 300E gave the Corvette a run for its money. I haven't heard the 300SE/L described as peppy.
