Show me one conflict in America that was/is as deeply intractible as the Sunni/Shia split. Euro-Americans had a lot less in common with Afro-Americans than Sunnis with Shias yet we have managed to make a far better peace with each other than the Sunni/Shia. Even with all the brutality of the Jim Crow days, the sheer number of Shia deaths under Saddam, and the current rate of Sunni deaths at the hands of Shia death squads dwarf the number of deaths of blacks at the hands of whites.
I don't have a good explanation for why they have such a violently bad relationship, do you?
