The 87 SDL's you can stick a magnet to, and the ones off the 88 or 89 420SEL that are in my basement are magnetic as well.

So when where they aluminum? MB also makes no mention of this in any of the W126 literature I have.
Tap on a body panel then on the hood or trunk, most definatley aluminum. A bit of paint flaked off my hood by a headlight, and it was shiny and never rusted (after months and months) then I painted over it. A magnet will stick because the underframe of the hood and trunk is steel.
