The second part your mechanic referrs to is probably the gear selector switch in the shifter box.
I've seen more EGS codes set from spilled drinks in the selector switch than all other faults combined!
If you decide to have the switch replaced don't let your mechanic talk you into a complete shifter box (BIG BUCKS) the switch is less than $100.00 plus inst.
