Flowdrips problem would have been the vacuum pump under the rear seat, or the switch inside the drivers door lock mechanism not operating the vacuum pump. I've had both of those problems on a '84 190 2.2D.
Exactly what year and model is your car? Your problem sounds more like a vacuum leak or disconnected vacuum hose/connector.
