after checking the tie rods under the car the next place i would look is at the steering box. it is pretty easy to adjust if you can reach the adjuster with the v8 in there. just loosten the 19mm lock nut and turn the adjuster allen head nut anticlockwise til all the play is out and it begins to bind up then loosten til it is free again.
and if you might not be real expereinced with benzes i might warn you that if you are accustomed to rack and pinion you will find the benz steering a little unresponsive off center compared to the rack.
