You could even order them with a diesel engine, that horrible GM idea of one anyway, the one that was actually a gas engine that could run on diesel and grenaded constantly.
Thanks, I didn't even know, now I'll be on the lookout to determine (hmm... 78 or 79?). Despite their age, I still see them regularly, probably because they were made in such massive numbers. My mother had a 1978 Coupe DeVille before I was born, it was black, the "landau" portion was black as well, with a black interior, and wire spoke wheel covers. By the time I was born however, she'd stopped driving it in favor of a 85 Mercury Cougar, and was now looking for a nice four door car to haul me around in, and that's when we got the 300SD.
