No problem with doing this on an autobox.

Unless you are talking about getting engine braking on long downhill sections in mountain driving, I'm not sure why you'd do it in a manual shift car. I'd much rather replace worn brake pads than a worn-out clutch from excessive downshifting.

But that's just me.
