Never go proprietary. I did once, and there was such a lack expandability, I opted for a new Gigabyte socket 478 mainboard. I finally had a BIOS, that was actually a dual system (in case of a bad flash), and I could tweak things such as the memory timings, and the FSB. With the proper 500W power supply unit of course, I can have a pretty nice videocard, although my mainboard is limited to an AGP (8X) and not PCI Express (16X).
My 478 may be outdated by today's standards, but I can tweak the performance of my computer up 25% (FSB OC'd) with slightly better ventilation and an extra fan with more efficient heatsink and the processor only hits 38C at full load.
