How do I access the underside of the fuse panel in my 1984 300D W123?

I have worked on a W126 and it is so easy to lift out the fuse panel and attach a wire to a fuse connection underneath. Unfortunately, the W123 has the fuse panel embedded in the firewall.

Do I have to go in from under the steering wheel?!?!? (I hope not!)
