When my dad was in the army, he always carried a Browning Hi-Power.
His reasoning? It'll penetrate. If someone is hiding behind a car door, or a fence or something like that, he can shoot him through it. He also swears by the reliability of them - they did many tests and found them to be without jams after more rounds than any other pistols they tried.
