So far, so good.
Got a used booster and master cyl. from an '82 300D. The two are not directly interchangeable, but my trusty hacksaw helped change a bushing into a spacer, and voila! POWER BRAKES!
Had the functional booster and a functional shutoff servo in place in less than two hours. Didn't have to diconnect the brake lines from the m.c., so no bleeding necessary. Keys to this operation: an air ratchet and a wobble extension. If you don't have wobble extensions, wait until the set goes on sale at Harbor Freight and buy one. For $10 you get nine or ten extensions (1/4, 3/8, AND 1/2") that allow the socket to wobble a few degrees (nine, I think, to be exact). These aren't pretty, and don't stay on the ratchet all that well, but they are INVALUABLE! You will thank yourself ten thousand times over for bying them! Especially if you have air, 'cause you can't always get a straight shot at the nut/bolt with a bulky air ratchet and hose to deal with.
Anyway, the two nuts you can see get the m.c. out of the way. After that, remove the d/s kickpanel and the cruise brain, then the bolt (or pin on later models?) that attaches the piston to the brake pedal arm, and the four bolts on the inside of the firewall that hold the booster in place.
Getting it back in was a little tricky, as there is a reinforcing plate on the inside that wants to fall down so the holes don't line up. Take a 90-degree pick and use it to hold the bracket in place while you get the bottom two studs on the booster started in their holes; get your pick out of the way, and get that booster in there. Tighten everything back down, and your done.
If you are using a later-model booster on an older car, p.m. and I'll tell you what modifictions are necessary.
Jay.
