Self-Leveling rear suspension was standard fitment on the 124 wagons just as was the case with the 123 wagons that came before them. The SLS is what gives the wagons their load-carrying capability. Having owned our 124 wagon ('90 300TE) for over 8 years and a 123 wagon ('80 300TD) for almost 5 years before that, I can say that I would not want a wagon without SLS. It is not as troublesome as some would have you believe and not difficult to repair on the odd occasion it fails. During 13 years of MB wagon ownership, SLS repairs for me have amounted to a pair of air cells on the 123 and a pair of air cells and a hydraulic hose on the 124. Not a big outlay for a system that combines superb ride and road-holding with great load-carrying and towing capability.
