W/o a MB special tool setting the pinion depth is a calculated guess.

Are you replacing all of the bearings?? IF so then...

BEFORE the differential is dis-assembled measure the depth from the rear cover mating surface.. You will need to make sure that the pinion is still at that height when the pinion bearing pre-load is set correctly.
