Is there any possibility you could contact someone in Germany, share the contents of the article and have them research it? It sounds to me like you've spent a lot of GBPs trying to sort this and have nothing to show for it.
I can contact my local parts specialist and see what he says. I know an ECU is going to be huge $$$ and is likely to be specific to the region where the derv is sold.

Thanks all for help so far. Uberwgn, you are not as disappointed as me!!lol
I have spent a fair bit so far having the diesel inj pump and system gone over with a fine tooth comb, and it is now spot on and the problem persists. I will se what I can find out from Germany, not sure how to start, but I will think about it. Looks like someone on here has found out prices for me in USA. The cost here is £905.58 for a new ECU which I assume would have the software update later than 23/99 or a chassis matched exchange ECU at a cost of £682.92. Neither price include VAT at 17.5%.
I can't see a chassis matched one making any difference at all.
You are probably right, one from USA would be different because of emissions, and fuel!
I don't however want to spend out and not correct the problem. As I said I may just try having the car put on diagnostic tester at Merc main dealer just on the off chance that their equiptment picks up something my engineers up to date Bosch equipt didn't. If Merc reccomend the new ECU and it doesn't cure the problem at least I'd get my money back.
Any info you can come up with I would be more than grateful.
John
