I put a Toyota diesel into a 1942 Willy's jeep. It had a rag top with no doors--natural air conditioning. I don't recall smelling the diesel exhaust, but the exhaust came out the side with our home made muffler. I've seen the black smoke come out when the engine is floored, though. I'd say do it. Put that diesel in!
