How long did you crank it? Try going for 10-15 seconds and I bet it will start, if its a healthy engine (only if its over 55-60F outside though). Glow plugs will help a lot. You could also power them up manually for like 20 seconds, then quick go start the engine...that'd work too. I bet a Haynes manual for the car would have the glow plug wiring schematic in it...usually its not a very complicated circuit. The factory manual might too.
