Mercedes actually makes a retrofit fuse holder for the fan circuit. It puts the fuse ouitside the main fuse box and uses a 30? amp strip fuse. Applicable to 126 models; probably your 116 also. Check the archives. Lots of info on it.
Obviously a common problem, if MB actually made a part to correct the fault.
