It doesn't surprise me very much that the Pope can get along well with Muslims. In many ways they are both medieval traditions trying to survive in the modern world. They have more in common with each other than either has with modern secular democracy. The place where this commonality is so obvious is in the role of women in both traditions. I have some vague recollection of Muslim/Catholic cooperation on a worldwide attempt to curb women's control of their bodies.
