One of the knobs below the meters is a potentiometer control that adjusts the dash lights from dim to bright. They are of poor quality. Try repeatedly turning the pot back and forth to get the lights on. With my '82 300D, there are only about three "live" spots across the whole range of the control - so I left it on the brightest and now never touch it.
