Don't pass up a 3.5. Yeah, it has less displacement, but for its size and weight it has plenty of power.
Also, the 2.8l 300sel also had air suspension.
As for prices, yes, 1,000$US for parts is serious money, but that's done once every 100,000km or so. The fun part is doing the work, and if you're paying somebody else to do it, yes, it will cost you.
